Future Date Flag of a renewing certificate document

I have a series of certificates which are renewed on an annual individual basis.
Is there a way when I add a document of registering this renew date within the system of each document.
So the workflow would inform a user that the timeline had been reached and display a list of document certificates that need renewing.
This is used in medical applications such as doctors practice certificates.

You can use the calendar rather than the WF. You can define a calendar event on the specific certificate, this event represents the renew date and you can also associate users to that event so they will be alerted a time before(like you are used to do with Outlook calendar)
